Ar ôl y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf roedd economi yr Almaen ar chwâl, ac roedd grwpiau gwleidyddol yn ymrafael â'i gilydd. Ar 11 Awst 1919 daeth Cyfansoddiad Weimar i rym. Ond roedd yr anfodlonrwydd yn parhau gan dyfu'n gefnogaeth i Blaid y Natsïaid a oedd wedi cael ei ffurfio yn 1918.
